Stump Removal vs Stump Grinding: What’s The Difference?

tree stump that need to be removed

There are many reasons for cutting down a tree. Perhaps it was blocking the view or it was close enough to the home that it was dangerous. Whatever the case may be, now that the tree is gone, there is just a stump left in its place. There are two primary ways of getting rid of a stump, with these being stump removal and stump grinding. There are a few important differences in these services and these differences can help determine which one would be the best solution.

Tree Stump Removal

As the name probably implies, tree stump removal involves the complete removal of the stump, which includes the root system attached. This is an involved process, as it requires heavy equipment to pull the entire stump out of the ground. During clearing building sites, it is common to use stump removal methods.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding involves the use of a machine called a stump grinder. Essentially, this machine combines the looks of a lawn mower and circular saw. It is placed over the stump and used to grind it down deep into the ground, with some machines going as deep as 18 inches. The stump is basically ground down so far that there is really no trunk of the tree left. Some people may be concerned that roots left in the ground can resprout, but this is unlikely. Stump grinding is also more environmentally friendly than stump removal is. Since stump removal requires the use of chemicals to loosen soil during the removal.

Cost

When it comes down to cost, tree stump removal is going to be a larger hit to the pocketbook. This is because it takes much more time and will require heavy equipment to complete. Although, it does mean that the stump and roots will be completely removed, which can make replanting in the area much easier and faster.

Damage to Yard

When looking for the method that will cause the least disturbance to a yard, then stump grinding would be the way to go. This process is quite fast and will only leave a hole directly where the trunk of the tree once was. Stump removal on the other hand will result in much more disturbance to the yard. The root system removal process can result in a much larger hole that spans quite far away from the trunk.

Reason for Eliminating the Stump

The best method for eliminating a stump really comes down to what it is being eliminated for. If it is purely for cosmetic or proximity reasons, then stump grinding is likely the best solution. It is quicker, less costly, and the roots will decay over time, eventually leaving no trace of the tree. Although, if there is going to be construction going on where the tree once was, then it will be necessary to completely remove the tree. In addition, if the homeowner would like to do any new planting in the area, then completely removing the stump will allow that to happen sooner.
